Jose Rizal Manga on it's Birthday!

Yes, you heard it right. Philippines National Hero is now a manga hero!

Just in time for his 157th, Publisher TORICO released the first volume last June 19, 2018. Ryo Konno did the illustrations while Takahiro Matsui wrote the story. Its first volume is available for free reading at manga.club and in Japanese on sukima.me. There are plans to release the manga in Filipino.

The manga will have a total of 100 pages that would detail the life of the national hero. New pages will be released every Tuesday.

Publisher TORICO said this is the first manga written about Rizal. Takuro Ando, Torico company representative, said that he was inspired to make a manga about Jose Rizal after seeing a statue of him in Hibiya Park, Tokyo.

The short first chapter opens with his execution in Bagumbayan, and ends with a young Rizal witnessing the arrest of his mother.

Mr. Xiao Chua ask Takahiro Matsui why is he doing it, Matsui-san said this, "Because, there are so many Filipino kids in Japan, and they study in Japanese schools. So they have no chance to know about the national hero of Philippines. Some kids don't take pride about their country. Sometimes they are ashamed. Why am I Filipino? Why my mother is Filipino? I know the Philippines is a nice country, the people have an open mind and high dignity. They should know that their country is good place."

See original post below:

Rizal apparently stayed in Japan for 45 days in 1888 and was said to have been charmed by the country's natural beauty and its people, prompting him to study its culture and traditions. Rizal took great pains to study the Japanese language during his brief stay in the country. True to his playboy image, Jose Rizal fell in love with a Japanese woman named Seiko Usui.

One-Shot Spotlight: 1/3 NO KARESHI

Hanya! I haven't update this series in a while. Ever heard of adulting, fellow manga geeks? yep, I was kinda distracted with real life but anyway, I'm back for sanity purposes.

On the One-Shot Spotlight this is week is a classic one-shot published years ago by Shimaki Ako. This precious one shot is about a cute and up-tight third year high school student named Fukuda Rei is pressured for not having a boyfriend despite being a third year.  Then suddenly, a handsome guy ask to take her photo and she said yes, unknowingly her underwear was showing. The handsome guy sort of blackmailed Rei to meet her in order not to spread the photo. They keep on meeting until Rei falls in love with the guys but there is something that guy is hiding. What is it?

I dare you again to read it! This is a classic one shot almost old manga reader (sorry for the lack of a better term, sometimes new readers/millenial readers, refer me as obaasan/ajumma already for being a reader/otaku/fangirl for a long time) Going back, you shouldn't miss reading this one, despite the cliche-ness of the plot, this one shot has it's own charisma that will drawn you to read, look, search for more to read.

I rate this one-shot 8/10 for old times sake.

Why You Should Watch Sakamichi ni Apollon before the Lent Season Ends

Are you someone who is into a slice of life with a coming of age story? Someone who wants to know what it’s like in the 60’s era? Someone who is into music? Want to reflect while binge-watching an anime guilt-free this lent (if you are a Christian/Catholic)? Okay mate, you are in the right place, here’s a series worthy of your time this lent and vacation—Sakamichi no Apollon/Kids on the Slope.

Sakamichi no Apollon is a Japanese manga series by Yuki Kodama, it ran from September 28, 2007, to July 28, 2012. An anime television series adaptation was aired last Spring of 2012 with 12-episodes. The live-action film opened last March 10 of 2018.

The story was set at the beginning of summer, 1966. Kaoro Nishimi, 1st-year high school student Kaoru Nishimi moves by himself from Yokosuka to Sasebo in Kyushu to live with relatives because of his father's job situation. Until then, Kaoru was an honor roll student who tended to keep to himself but meeting notorious "bad boy" Sentaro Kawabuchi starts to change him. Through his devil-may-care classmate, Kaoru learns how much fun it is to play jazz and finds the first person he can call a real friend. The two main hero might have a bad start but soon develop a cherished friendship, founded with love of music, love, and respect. //No, this is not Yaoi.// Now enter in Ritsuko Mukae, a girl with an important role that will complete the amazing trio.

Before anything else to those of you who don’t know what is lent. Lent is honoring the sacrifice and death of Jesus Christ. Later on, you will know, why I personally recommend this series to those otaku honoring the lent.

Now, why you should watch this series? (especially before lent ends again)

1. STORY OF FRIENDSHIP.

The main element of the story is friendship. You will learn two or more (a lot)  about cherishing friends. According to the series, UNLIKE LOVE AFFAIRS, FRIENDSHIP IS FOR LIFE.

2. SIMPLE YET UNFORGETTABLE ANIMATION

To be honest, the animation is really not exceptional however, it's very adorable and appealing there's is a unique taste in it

3. REMARKABLE MUSIC. YOU WILL APPRECIATE JAZZ MUSIC WITH THIS ANIME.

Need  I say more? Listen to the music below. It was composed by no other than, Yoko Kanno!

4.  THE TRIO AND THEIR BACKSTORIES.

Why is it always appealing to have a trio as main characters? Anyway, each of our main characters has a very unique backstory and it's amazing how the mangaka manages to merge their characteristics and came up with an amazing masterpiece.  PLUS, SEN AND RITSUKO are Catholic Christians in the story.

5. THE ENDING | HIGHLIGHT FOR SPOILER // Father drummer!

I SWEAR TO GOD, IT HAS THE BEST ENDING OUT THERE!

----------------------------------------------------------

What are you waiting for? Binge-watch this anime now before Easter this year ends!

One-Shot Spotlight: Kimi wa Maru de, Ano Hana no You de

Good day, geeks. I'm still up for all the one-shot manga that I highly what you guys to read. This week's recommendation is Kimi wa Maru de, Ano Hana no You de by Misaki Gotou was serialized by Sho-Comi. It has 3 chapters, equivalent to 1 volume.

The story is about Nazuna Hinagata who falls in love with her senpai, Ichikawa Nao. Unfortunately, it was unrequited because Nao is in a relationship. As time passes, our main heroine finally lets go of her unrequited love to her senpai and aims a different love interest, however on the first day of high school, she unexpectedly met Nao senpai again, the senpai who broke her heart. Will this time be a good ending or not

I dare you to read it. The first chapter was very promising. It has some unexpected twist, very unexpected in a short manga. It was also heartwarming at the same time and worth reading especially if you are feeling melancholic.

My rating for this one-shot or since it has three chapters, short manga is 7 out of 10.

One-Shot Spotlight: Massugu Kimi e

We are not done yet with Haruka Mitsui. This gem was published last October 10, 2014, still under The Dessert.

This is a very cute love story about broken hearts and friendship. Main characters are both childhood friends. The main heroine is a heartbroken fella who afraid to love again. It's a story of realizing that the person that we are really looking is just beside us all along or could be more.

Read and you shall find out!

My hands are always up for Mistui-sensei's art. The story is quite a cliche but nonetheless, it was entertaining it was a cute quick read.

My rating for this one-shot is 8/10

Other works of Haruka Mitsui-sensei:

One-Shot Spotlight: Banken Hero

Another one-shot gem by Haruka Mitsui. It was published July 24, 2014, under Dessert.

The story is about a clumsy boy who is in love with a very strong independent girl. All he wants was to be a perfect hero who will be a perfect knight in shining armor to her princess. Unfortunately, her princess is not the typical damsel in distress and he, on the other hand, is clumsy could be mistaken as the damsel in distress.

So how will our main hero capture the heart of the main character?

It's for you to find out!

Same as what Daisuki no Yukue, the art is always amazing and dreamy but this time it has a bit of angst and dialogues are funnier than any other Haruka Mitsui's one-shot. The story transition was smooth you'd wish it was not just a one-shot.

My rating for this one-shot is 10/10

Other works of Haruka Mitsui-sensei:

- Atashi Kisushita
- Houkago, Koishita

One-Shot Spotlight: Daisuki no Yukue

Reading manga is not just a good past time, as a manga reader for almost a decade now, it also serves as my stress reliever, my get-away from reality and inspiration as an aspiring writer.

I always encourage fellow fans to read the manga especially those anime series that was adapted but sometimes I get responses such as, it’s tiring to read. Therefore, this blog series is created. One-shot Spotlight is my mini-series where I will be featuring one-shot manga that deserves all the love and attention.

One way of starting the hobby of reading manga is to read one-shots because it will help you get used to reading from left to right, not only that, you will also appreciate how some mangaka’s are very creative to fit a very awesome story in short form with few pages only.

For the information of everyone, did you know that some major series ongoing today started out as a one-shot manga. Before they get serialized and became an official series, mangas such as Haikyuu, Koe no Kitachi and many to mention started out as a 50-pages more or less story.

So, for the first installment of this series, I proudly present DAISUKI NO YUKUE / ダイスキのゆくえ

Daisuki no Yukue by Haruka Mitsui was published last December 10, 2014 and serialized by The Dessert.

The story is about a girl, member of the art club who sketches drawing for her club. The boys' volleyball team allowed her to draw them during games and practices as her art practice/project. She admires this one boy who happens to be her classmate too who shows a lot of effort in the volleyball team despite his height disadvantage, our MC was drawn to this hardworking boy. One particular senpai/upperclassman stops her from noticing other volleyball club member and just focus on him, it seems that this senpai likes our MC but who will she choose? Senpai or hardworking classmate? Perfect for the English alternate title, My Love Goes Where?

You go read it for you to know!

I’ve read all available manga online by Haruka Mitsui-sensei and would always be amazed how transitions is so smooth and art is just so pretty. The plot is kind of unique than any other shoujo one-shot. I always go back to this manga if I wanted to read something sporty and fluffy. It’s like Haikyuu with a very fluffy romance. Plus, the dialogues are pretty neat and cheesy.
My rating for this one-shot is 10/10.

Other works of Haruka Mitsui-sensei:

- Atashi Kisushita
- Massugu Kimi E
- Banken Hero
- Houkago, Koishita

Anime Review: Just Because!

Just Because! is a 13-episode anime aired last Fall of 2017. It’s an original anime that falls into the genres of slice of life, drama, school, romance and a bit coming of age. The story revolves around 5 high school students. Third year, Mio Natsume, the former Student Council President with lingering feelings: Hazuki Morikawa, aloof trumpet player: Haruto Souma, the baseball maniac and Second year, Ena Komiya, a very determined girl who will do anything to keep her club, joining them in the last semester of the school year is our main protagonist, Eita Izumi, a transfer student who will have a big role in changing the the remaining days of their high school life.

As the school year ends, the Senior High School students are also getting ready for the next chapter of their life, graduation, college and work. Eita Izumi transferred even if it's really unusual to transfer when the school year almost coming to an end which he really doesn't mind due to his father's work. But it just happen that the recent transfer would be Eita's hometown which will rekindle the old flames not only hidden love but friendship as well.

The series is very character-centric that's why there are part that's feels really off when this group of students are together. it focuses more on the character development of how these students struggles on their way to adulthood than having a very dramatic plot twist that could actually draw a lot of viewers, to be honest.

The overwhelming part is how the anime was presented per episode. It's very calm and pleasing. It's not pretending to be a romance-ish that needs lots of drama. The transition was smooth and dialogues are relatable.

Since the story focuses on the characters, some people are quite not into some of the characters which I think is the purpose, for us not to like them because each of us has our own dilemma and pleasing everyone is impossible. Personally, I like every characters, each of them has their own motives. For example, Mio being genuine turned indecisive after meeting Eita again. Nevertheless, each of them are interesting.
Visual wise, Just Because! seems to be obsessed on showing the characters close up that you can tell every emotions whether the character is faking a smile, about to cry, lying or very happy. background music are good to listen. Let's not forget how awesome the opening song is sung by Yanagi Nagi titled Over and over. Ending is cool too. The never show a preview of the next episode, so very spoiler free.

Overall, I would still recommend this series despite how remarkably common it was. It's not pretending to be unique but stayed being realistic and didn't go that far to spice things up. It will give you the right amount of excitement and never really that depressing. The ending is satisfying for me and that's what makes Just Because, Just Because one of the many series that became one of my memorable anime last season.

Top 10 Anime Songs for the Holiday Season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again. As fans of anime songs, I bet you are probably sick of listening to the usual Western Christmas music, traditional and classical (or the overused Christmas Station ID songs of our dear local TV networks and if you are from the Philippines, Jose Mari Chan )
Thus this list was born to give a bit of a geeky feeling while enjoying the holidays. Be prepared to feel eargasm and from Vi-Geeky, Happy Holidays!

10. Card Captor Sakura - Yoru no Uta

From the anime Christmas CD, Cardcaptor Sakura: Tomoeda Elementary school Chorus Christmas Concert. Sakura Kinomoto doesn't appear on this album at all, so the concert features Junko Iwao as Tomoyo Daidouji.

9. Detective Conan - Winter Bells

Opening 10 of the long running mystery series Detective Conan

8. Sailor Moon - Last Christmas (Sailor Mars Ver.)

Though this is definitely a Western Christmas song (for the broken hearted) and it has a lot of cover around the globe, this version is still worth listening. This is from the Sailor Moon Christmas album. It is the cover version of WHAM's performed by Michie Tomizawa, the Japanese voice of Rei Hino/Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon. This is one of only 2 songs from the Sailor Moon Christmas Albums that are sung in English (the other being White Christmas, also by Tomizawa).

7. Pokemon - Mousugu Santa ga Yattekuru!

Ending song from Pikachu's Winter Vacation 2001 OVA, from the Album: Pikachu no Fuyuyasumi Soundtrack (Pikachu's Winter Vacation Soundtrack) It was released last December 22, 2000 and sung by Mayumi Sudou

6. Shugo Chara!! - Happy Xmas

From the Character Song Album of the same series and performed by Kanae Itou (Amu Hinamori), Kana Asumi (Ran), Nanae Katou (Miki), Aki Toyosaki (Suu)

5. Macross Frontier - Merry Christmas Without You by cosmic cuune

The song is sung by May'n (Sheryl Nome's singing voice), Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee) and Frontier Stars which consisted of cast members Yūichi Nakamura, Aya Endo, Hiroshi Kamiya, Megumi Toyoguchi, Kenta Miyake, Rie Tanaka, and Kaori Fukuhara.

4. Toradora - "Holy Night" by Ami and Taiga Rie Kugimiya (Taiga) and Eri Kitamura (Ami)

Yes, I bet it is your favorite part of the Christmas episode of the series too. It was performed in episode 19 during their school’s holiday party.

3. Bakuman - We wish you a merry Christmas -Hayami Saori (Azuki Miho)

Insert song from Season 2, Episode 24 of the series! Engrish aside, her voice is just so sweet!

2. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - White Wishes

Ending song of the awesome and cool, romantic-comedy series My Neighbor is a Monster (Read the effin’ manga!) It’s very chritmas-sy on the official MV than on the visuals of the anime ending theme!

1. Love Live! - Snow Halation

This is μ’s second single. It was released on December 22, 2010 on both a CD and Blu-ray disc, in order to celebrate the upcoming Christmas Day. It is also included in all of μ's solo albums and μ's Best Album Best Live! Collection. It was also used as an ending theme for episode 9 of Love Live! School idol project Season 2.  Source: http://love-live.wikia.com/wiki/Snow_halation
